# About

David Moraton is a visual artist born in Alicante, Spain, and a New Zealand citizen living in Wellington. He holds degrees in Fine Arts and in Computer Science Engineering, a combination that runs through everything he makes: drawings built with the patience of a draughtsman, and video works built with the tools of a technical director.

He experiences synaesthesia, specifically chromesthesia — sound to colour. Music, bird calls and voices arrive as colour and movement, and his work is an attempt to make that perception visible to other people. The drawings, digital works and video art return constantly to one idea: that things which appear opposite are in fact deeply connected.

His video work *Visus Sonitus*, a stereoscopic visualisation of Einojuhani Rautavaara's *Cantus Arcticus*, was shortlisted for the Lumen Prize in 2015 and shown in New York, Shanghai, London and Manchester. He has lectured on drawing music at the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, and has worked as an effects technical director on films including *Jupiter Ascending*, *Man of Steel* and *Thor*. In 2023 he received a Visual Effects Society Award for his simulation work on *Avatar: The Way of Water*.

## Artist statement

My practice is rooted in the deep interconnectedness of all things, including those that appear opposite in our perception. I try to foster in the spectator an openness to creativity and to perceiving reality with an open mind, because through art we can reach an augmented, elevated state of vision that reveals this hidden, resonating reality we normally miss.
